What’s Whiskey Got To Do With It?
A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I went back to our new favorite local liquor store here in town. It seems with each passing day, my husband’s interest in bourbon…in fact all things whisk(e)y…deepens and our liquor budget nudges slightly higher.
Usually, we wander in the small, but well-curated whiskey section of this shop while my husband identifies things he’d like to try based on whatever YouTube video taste test caught his attention most recently.
But this time wouldn’t be like those other times.
This time, a masked gentleman approached us.
Turns out. he’s the shop owner. He welcomed us in a way that was warm, personable, and basically over the top knowledgeable.
He got my husband’s heart all a flutter with talk about the upcoming email that would usher in the shop’s Bourbon Allocation Season™.
Then he asked, “are you on our email list?”
Turns out, I wasn’t sure. Even though I have given them my email address both in-person and online.
So why don’t I know?
I never got a welcome email.
If you are putting in the effort to build your subscriber list, you really need to have a welcome email ready to go.
You don’t invite people to your party and then not show them where the bar is.
Your welcome email makes sure that everyone…from the first guest to one who’s fashionably late… gets the same enthusiastic greeting and it allows you give them the lay of the land.
It’s also your first and your best chance to show people what it is going to be like to be in a relationship with you.
For the owner of the liquor store? He admitted that email writing isn’t really his zone of genius…but as I stood there, my glass was practically overflowing with email ideas from a warm welcome to weekly moments of value he could share with his audience.
So I gave him my card.
I want his email subscribers to have that same feeling of “so glad I stopped in” that in-person visitors to the shop can have with him.
If you have an email list builder or other online sign-up, do you have a welcome to the party email?

If you don’t have a welcome email, we should talk.
